Why consider gifting mutual funds?

Who can you gift mutual funds to?
A financial gift can take many forms. Here are some occasions and relationships where you may consider it.
Parents : A thoughtful gesture in return
They invested their time, effort and resources in your future. A financial gift can be one way of expressing your appreciation.
Occasions: Birthdays, anniversaries, retirement and family celebrations.
Children : An early introduction to investing
A financial gift can open conversations about saving, investing, patience and financial responsibility.
Occasions: Birthdays, graduation and educational milestones.
Newlyweds : A gift for a new beginning
Beyond the usual wedding gifts, a financial gesture can be a thoughtful way to celebrate a new chapter.
Occasions: Weddings, anniversaries and new beginnings.
Siblings and family : Share a part of your journey
A meaningful gift for those who have been part of your life and shared your journey.
Occasions: Festivals, achievements, birthdays and family milestones.
The next generation : A thought that travels forward
A financial gift can encourage younger family members to understand ownership, investment and financial responsibility.
Occasions: Birth of a child, family milestones and legacy-related gestures.
For minors, the applicable investment and account arrangements need to be followed separately.
You can make a mutual fund-related financial gift in two different ways. Understanding the distinction is important.
The ownership of the transferred units changes, while the investment continues to remain in the mutual fund scheme. |
Example: You gift ₹50,000 to an adult child, who can use the money to make a fresh mutual fund investment in their own name. |
The transfer of eligible mutual fund units held in Statement of Account (SoA) or non-demat form follows the prescribed AMFI framework.
Step 1: Check the eligibility
Confirm that the units are eligible for transfer and are not under lock-in, lien, freeze or any other restriction.
Step 2 : Check recipient details
The recipient must meet the applicable investor eligibility and KYC requirements and have the required folio with the same mutual fund.
Step 3 : Initiate the transfer
Use the prescribed online transfer facility through the relevant RTA transaction portal or MF Central, where enabled.
Step 4 : Complete verification
Enter the required details and complete the prescribed identity, OTP and other validations.
Step 5 : Confirm the transfer
Once processed, verify the updated holdings and transaction records in the recipient's folio.
For units held in demat form, the applicable depository transfer mechanism needs to be followed separately.
The process is subject to applicable regulatory, eligibility and operational requirements.
Eligibility and restrictions
The standard SoA gifting facility applies to eligible individual holdings. Units under lock-in, lien or freeze are not eligible. ETFs and specified solution-oriented schemes are excluded from this facility.
Minimum residual holding
Partial transfers are permitted, subject to the applicable minimum residual holding requirements. A shortfall may result in compulsory redemption of residual units.
Redemption restriction
Under the standard SoA gifting framework, transferred units cannot be redeemed for 10 days from the date of transfer.
Charges and documentation
Applicable stamp duty, if any, is payable by the transferor. Check the prescribed documentation and payment requirements with the authorised platform or registrar.
Tax implications
Tax treatment depends on the relationship between the donor and recipient, the nature of the gift and subsequent transactions.
Tax treatment is an important consideration when gifting mutual fund units or money for a fresh investment.
The implications may differ depending on who gives the gift, who receives it, the nature of the gift and what happens when the investment is subsequently redeemed.
A gift may not trigger tax immediately, but subsequent income or redemption can have tax implications.
Is receiving mutual fund units as a gift taxable?
Gifts from specified relatives are generally exempt from tax, subject to applicable provisions. Gifts from non-relatives may be taxable if the prescribed aggregate value threshold is exceeded and no exemption applies.
Who qualifies as a relative for tax exemption?
Specified relatives generally include a spouse, siblings, siblings of either spouse, siblings of either parent, and specified lineal ascendants, descendants and their spouses, as covered by the applicable law. Friends and colleagues do not automatically qualify.
What happens if I gift mutual fund units to a friend?
A gift to a non-relative may be taxable in the recipient's hands if the applicable aggregate threshold is crossed and no exemption applies.
Does gifting existing units attract capital gains tax for the donor?
Generally, a genuine gift is not treated as a taxable transfer for capital-gains purposes in the donor's hands, subject to applicable statutory conditions. The recipient may face capital-gains tax upon subsequent redemption.
What is the cost of acquisition for the recipient?
Generally, the previous owner's original acquisition cost is considered for capital-gains computation when the applicable gift provisions apply. The value of the units on the date of gifting does not automatically become a new purchase cost.
Does the holding period start afresh after receiving gifted units?
Generally, no. The previous owner's holding period is also considered, subject to applicable provisions, for determining the holding period of gifted units.
Are there tax implications when units are gifted to a spouse?
Although the gift itself may be exempt, income-clubbing provisions may apply to income arising from assets transferred to a spouse without adequate consideration. The resulting income may be taxable in the donor's hands.
What if I gift mutual fund units to my child?
Gifts to children generally qualify for the specified-relative exemption. However, income-clubbing provisions may apply to income arising in the hands of a minor child, subject to statutory exceptions.
Does gifting mutual fund units offer any tax-saving benefit?
Not automatically. Tax treatment depends on the relationship, applicable exemptions, income-clubbing provisions and subsequent redemption.
Is gifting money for a fresh investment taxed in the same way as gifting existing units?
The gift-tax principles may overlap, but the transactions differ. A money gift results in a fresh investment by the recipient, whereas gifted units carry their existing acquisition history for capital-gains purposes.
Tax information is provided for general educational purposes. The applicable Income-tax Act, rules and amendments govern the tax treatment at the relevant time. Individual circumstances may result in different outcomes. Please consult a qualified tax professional for advice on your specific situation.
Can I gift mutual fund units that I already own?
Yes. Eligible mutual fund units can be transferred to another eligible individual through the prescribed process, subject to applicable conditions.
Do I need to redeem my units before gifting them?
No. Eligible existing units can be transferred without first redeeming them and making a fresh investment.
Can I gift only a part of my mutual fund investment?
Yes. Partial transfers are permitted, subject to minimum residual holding and other applicable conditions.
Who can receive gifted mutual fund units?
Eligible individual investors who meet the applicable KYC, folio and regulatory requirements may receive transferred units.
Can I gift mutual fund units to a minor child?
The standard SoA gifting facility does not generally permit direct transfers between adult and minor folios. A separate investment route for minors needs to be considered.
Can I gift ELSS or ETF units?
Units under lock-in cannot be transferred through the standard process. ETFs are excluded from the standard SoA gifting facility. Demat holdings follow separate depository procedures.
Can I gift mutual fund units to an NRI?
Eligible non-resident individuals may receive units subject to applicable KYC, FEMA, tax, scheme and other regulatory requirements.
Is a gift deed required?
A gift deed is not routinely required under the standard SoA transfer process. Additional documentation may be necessary in particular circumstances. Seek legal advice where appropriate.
Can the recipient redeem the units immediately?
No. Under the standard SoA gifting framework, transferred units cannot be redeemed for 10 days from the date of transfer.
Is mutual fund gifting tax-free?
Not universally. Tax treatment depends on the donor-recipient relationship, applicable exemptions, income-clubbing provisions and subsequent redemption.
Is there a maximum amount I can gift?
Do not assume a universal monetary limit. Check the applicable transaction restrictions and platform requirements before initiating a transfer.
Can I gift money instead of transferring existing units?
Yes. You may gift money to an eligible recipient, who can make a fresh investment in their own name after completing the applicable formalities.
